History

The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) Graduate School traces its beginnings to 1960, when graduate studies began in UP College Iloilo through extension programs of the UP College of Public Administration (MPA Program) and the UP College of Education (MA in Teaching Program). Over the years, graduate education expanded with the introduction of fisheries programs in 1975 and management programs in 1976. In 1977, the Graduate Studies Program Office (GSPO) was established to administer graduate offerings, followed by the formal creation of a Graduate School (GS) in 1984. However, due to structural and administrative challenges, it was reorganized and eventually replaced by the Graduate Program Coordinating Office (GPCO) in 1991, and later by the Graduate Program Office (GPO) in 1995.

On April 28, 2022, UPV formally established the Graduate School (GS) as the central unit for overseeing graduate education. Today, it integrates various graduate programs across colleges to ensure stronger coordination, improved quality, and unified direction. The UPV Graduate School offers a wide range of master’s and doctoral programs, with strong emphasis on fisheries and aquatic sciences, while also promoting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. It supports research-driven and innovative education, flexible learning modes such as online and hybrid platforms, and strengthened international collaborations. Through these efforts, the UPV Graduate School aims to produce globally competitive graduates and contribute significantly to national and regional development.
